Five Animals.
The Wu Qin Xi — Five Animal Frolics — attributed to the physician Hua Tuo (c. 2nd century CE). A small set of movements that train the body through animal qualities rather than mechanical positions.
The five
- Tiger — strength, root, and predatory focus.
- Deer — lengthening, spinal mobility, soft alertness.
- Bear — weight, ground, and unhurried power.
- Monkey — agility, change of level, quick attention.
- Crane — balance, lightness, and breath-led poise.
Why animals
The animals are not roles to perform. They are reference qualities the body already contains. Practicing through them gives access to ranges of strength, attention, and movement that abstract instructions rarely reach.
